Transparent Images

Some images need to have transparent backgrounds, so they don't stick out and clash with your chosen background.

Something to keep in mind before we start. You will need to flood fill () the part of the image you want transparent with a color not on the image. Sometimes, PSP opens the image and does not allow you to choose a color that is not on the image. To solve this problem, hit PRINT SCREEN on your keyboard, and then just paste as a new image. Crop () the screen shot to the original image (because the new image will be your entire screen) and work from there.

Here is a perfect example. This kitty has a blue background. What if you want this current background to be transparent? This is how.

If you try flooding it, you will notice that the entire image gets flooded. You will need to use the magic wand to fix this.

First, choose a color not on the image. I choose green. Make sure both of the feilds are selected, it makes it easier.

Then choose this tool, it's called the magic wand. That will let you choose a piece of the image to flood.

Click to the left of the cat, and that side will get selected. A selected piece looks like this.

Now that you have that piece selected, use the flood fill to flood it green.

The flooded piece will now look like this.

Do that same thing with the magic wand and flood fill until the entire background that you want transparent has been flooded green. It should now look like this.

Next, you will need to make that transparent. Go to COLORS --> SET PALETTE TRANSPARENCY

When a window pops up, just click OK.

When the next window pops up, choose SET TO CURRENT BACKGROUND COLOR and then hit OK

Now, be sure to save the image as a .gif because that format allows transparency for sure. Other formats .bmp for example do not.

Your image should now have a transparent background. Open it and see.

I hope this tutorial helped you. Sometimes if it doesn't work, you need to set palate transparency several times until it cooperates. Most of the time it works the first time.
