FTP

Note: This tutorial is made using WS_FTP Pro.

If you have been hosted or got a domain, you will need to use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to "upload" your files. Some domain servers still have "file managers" but that's only if you bought a domain from a free server. Most domain hosting packages only allow for FTP. You will have to save your pages a text editor (in .html most likely). If you're moving from a free server to a host, just view the source of each subpage, edit whatever you have to, then SAVE AS .html (eg. index.html).

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. That's what it does. It transfers files between your computer to the web. There are many different FTP programs out there. I am going to teach you WS_FTP because that's what I use.

First, go to download.com and type in WS_FTP at the top. You will get a list of possible downloads back. Choose whichever one fits your OS (Operating System ex: Windows XP) but make sure it says freeware otherwise you will get a temporary program or have to pay! Here is one (click here) you can download. It has the most votes. But it will be a little bit different than my tutorial since my version is different.

When you have downloaded and installed the program, you should be able to open it from your start menu. I suggest you add an icon or shortcut to your desktop since you will be using it often to update your webpage(s).

First, when you have all your information from your host(ess) or from your own domain. You go up to FILE then chooose NEW SITE. Then just enter the name of your site. For example if you have two sites and one is personal and one is a clique, and you want to set up ftp for your clique, you would write YOURNAME CLIQUE or something like that. For HOST NAME you will put ftp.DOMAIN.COM or something like that. (It could be .net .org .nu etc). When you've done that, hit NEXT.

The next window asks you for your account information. If you're hosted, your account might be your first name. For example, on my current host, my account is "julie" because my site is /julie on her domain. The password is pretty self explanatory I think :) About the account. Some domains have it some don't need it. It depends. If you use it, your host(ess) will tell you what it is. Then, check the SAVE ACCOUNT box so that later you'll only have to enter your password. It's a lot easier than typing up all of this information again! Really here you can hit finish. The rest you can just leave as the default because it doesn't need to be changed.

Now you're ready to login. When you have it all saved, just hit the CONNECT button to connect and begin to upload your files.

I have created a color coded image for you to know what's going on.

The BLUE arrow is for the files on your computer. The YELLOW arrow is for the files you have uploaded to the web. To find your files to upload, click the browse button which has a RED circle around it. A window will pop up which looks like the one below in which you simply browse for the folder you have your files in. It can be a folder or a disk. Just find it through that.

Then, when you want to upload a file, click on it from the side that shows your files on your computer, and press the arrow that points to the right (which is circled in GREEN) and it should upload to the other side and show up on your computer side.

Just repeat the last step for as many files as you need to upload and there you go :) Enjoy!
