Filed under: General, Family @ 7:50 am

20 years ago a young family with a child packed up their belongings in the two suitcases they were allowed and left the USSR for good on their way to America. That was my family and I’m the child. I was 6 at the time so I don’t remember much of the journey, but I can tell you it took several months of travel before we were able to finally arrive in the US, unlike our other family members who we sent for as soon as we were able, who just hopped on a direct flight. We had to live in Rome for some time, in someone’s garage with several other immigrant families. Then we went to Vienna if I remember correctly. I don’t know how long we were and what all the different steps were to the journey, though I’m sure I could ask my parents and they could tell me every detail. All I know is it was tough, and it was a good thing that I was a young kid.  So 20 years ago, today, June 25, we left a communist country to move to the free world.

And two years ago tomorrow, June 26, hubby and I left the crazy and too socialist for anyone’s good state of California (or Kalifornia as we like to call it) and moved to Texas. And it’s been great.

  2. What an amazing story to tell your children. I remember my grandmother telling me the story of when they came to the USA from Greece. Things were bad in Greece at the time. That was back in 1914. I never get sick of that story. Thanks for sharing your story.

  4. Wow, that’s crazy. I never really hear about people who had to move like that. It would have been quite the experience. I’m glad that you have a great life now. I also find it interesting that you would like Texas more than California. I have never been to either state but from what I hear through TV and news broadcasts and such I would have thought it would be the other way around.

  6. Several months? Oh God, that must have been terrifying for your parents. Traveling with a little kid all around the world is not that great. Or maybe it’s just my opinion as a future (who knows) mother.

    Congrats on moving! :)

  8. Wow, you know what Julie? As much as people like to always talk about their childhood being this or that, bad or good.. I bet you had a really interesting one. I can’t imagine going through something like that and I hope this doesn’t sound stupid but in a weird way I’m envious.
