Internship and Sad News at Work

Filed under: General, Work @ 5:12 pm

Hubby got a summer internship in the legal field! He’s working for an attorney for veterans, unpaid, but good experience. He just started this past week and has been helping with general office admin stuff like filing the client files and answering calls and getting client information. Later the lawyer he’s working for will have him go to the courthouse and actually file cases, you know, real legal stuff. It sucks that it’s unpaid, but it’s two miles from my work so we get to ride together and so get to ride in the carpool lane.  That’s great that it’s so close because the gas would end up being quite a bit for this summer internship otherwise and it would make it hard to work for free and have to pay extra in gas. He likes it so far. It’s probably not something he’ll go into after graduating, but it’s good experience and resume builder anyway.

For those of you reading who are Houstonians, this will make sense to you. This law office he’s working in is right across from the Galleria. Today we got off early and went to lunch at the Kona Grill. I really liked that place. He said he has been looking at it all week thinking it’s very much a Julie place so we’re happy that we got to go there. I had the Macadamia Nut Chicken, their signature dish, and omg it was so good.

Now for the sad news. My favoritest awesomess boss lady ever told us yesterday that she is resigning and is going to work for industry again. She said this is the only consulting company she would work for, because she really likes the way it’s structured compared to other consulting firms, but she prefers industry work and she will get a pension there which is important to her. This is a refinery client that she’s been doing a lot of work for and spending months where she’s only working out of their office for the past two years that she’s been with our company. So when their Air team manager got moved to another role, they asked her to apply. I’m not surprised that they grabbed her, because she is really good at what she does and is just really awesome in general, but it sucks that she’s no longer going to be my boss. She says as soon as she gets authority she will get rid of the other consultant there and get us more involved, so we should still be able to work with/for her, but it won’t be the same. She’s so flexible and so friendly and we just talk about things for hours - pets, travel, food, whatever. We got along so well and I’ve never gotten along with a supervisor like that before. Everyone is just shell-shocked over this. It really shows how much she was liked in the office. They gave an offer to someone to take her place, and hopefully he will take it, but in the meantime while we get the new person adjusted if he decideds to join us, we’ve got some of the other senior staff stepping in to help out, one from our office who is never around and has passed on work to us randomly anyway because he doesn’t have time or doens’t want to do it, and another who’s in the Dallas office and is hard to communicate with when not in person. Great. The previous Department Manager is going back to being DM, and I have mixed feelings with that because she’s really demanding sometimes. I also wonder if my bonuses will continue with her being gone, because I know she’s been the one to push for taking care of me while she’s been my supervisor.  It’s funny cause a colleague said betcha ten bucks within the year she gives you a job offer down there. Well, I’m not sure that will happen because of the way the refinery is structured I doubt a position will open up, but at the same time, would I want to drive so far? It’s almost 70 miles one way, and the office now is only 30, and that takes a full hour sometimes. Hopefully things will transition smoothly and turn out ok, but right now it just seems scary and everything is uncertain.
